Gene Lawrence: Finger style Acoustic Guitarist, Composer & Arranger

Gene Lawrence played Pan in the early days of Silver Stars & Troubadors in Trinidad.

He was the Guitarist in Olive Walke’s ‘La Petit Musicale’ Folk Choir – Trinidad for many years.

Gene has performed extensively in the United Kingdom, and live in most of the Caribbean Islands – also doing Radio & TV Shows throughout the Region.

He was also the original Singing M.C. for Paul Keens Douglas’ ‘Talk Tent’ and made a Guest appearance at the 25th Anniversary celebrations on the 7th & 9th February 2008 in Trinidad.

He worked with Derek Walcott in the very early days of the ‘Little Carib Theatre’ in Trinidad, and more recently in arranging and presenting the music for his play ‘Steel’; and composing & arranging the music for Walcott’s play ‘Odyssey’ performed in Italy & Spain.

He was the Musical Director for Teyat Toutafe tent theatre &worked with Helen Camps to produce several plays successfully performed over three annual seasons.

He has also composed several scores of music for the Caribbean Theatre, and performed with many of the outstanding entertainers of the Region. 
Gene’s talent and dedication in the development of local music, is of an extraordinarily high standard – and this process of creation is palpably present in his works. He has produced several albums and CD’s of his original music, including compositions for Adrian Augier’s “Traumassy” Mario Vargas Llosa”s “La Chunga” Richard Ragoobarsingh”s Mary Could Dance” & others. 

Gene has also made a great contribution to the development of music in the Caribbean – he was a founder member of the National Association of Musicians & Entertainers in Trinidad, and of the St. Lucia Jazz Society in St. Lucia. He was also the Chairman of the St. Lucia Jazz Festival from it’s inception in 1992 and held that position for three years.

He was a Director of the Copyright Organization in Trinidad & Tobago in it’s infancy, and is now the Chairman of St. Lucia’s Copyright Society – Hewanorra Musical Society (HMS) Inc (Now ECCO Regional)., and also Chairman of the Regional ‘Caribbean Copyright Link’ (CCL). These positions resigned in 2010.
